Wigg puts in a hair-raising performance in Copenhagen.
PokerStars’ tournament juggernaut was on the move again last month, this time making its annual stop in the country that can proudly call itself home to such poker greats as Gus Hansen and Peter Eastgate.
The prodigal son of Denmark was returning to his homeland in a bid to continue his rich run of form and add to his ever-increasing bankroll. Since winning the WSOP Main Event in 2008, Eastgate has enjoyed a number of deep runs on the European circuit and that form continued in Copenhagen as he finished in 22nd place, just ahead of PokerStars teammate Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier. However, when the final chips had been raked in it was 22-year-old Anton Wigg that the crowd were tipping their hats to. The young Swedish player, whose biggest win prior to the tournament was €55,000, put in a hair-raising performance to cut his way through the 423-strong field and lift the EPT trophy. As well as collecting a €423,000 ($571,000) bounty for his victory he also booked his seat at the prestigious EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo, which is set to take place in late April. |
